Sun protection factor, often abbreviated as SPF, is used to measure how long you can stay in the sun without getting sunburnt. For example, SPF30 will offer 30x your usual exposure time, so if you’re prone to getting burnt after 5 minutes of exposure, you should now be able to stay in the sun for about 150 minutes without burning.

How often should you re-apply sunscreen?

There’s no exact science that tells you exactly how long you can spend in the sun and still be protected. No sunscreen can truly offer all-day sun protection, so to help prevent your skin from burning we recommend topping up your sunscreen every 2 hours, and after taking a dip in the sea or pool (even if the sunscreen is water resistant).

Choosing the SPF of a sunscreen depends a lot on your skin type. If you have light skin (type 1 or 2), you’re more prone to sunburn, so the best sunscreen for you is usually SPF50. For people with darker or olive skin, the best sunscreen may be SPF30, which will still offer protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays while also allowing a lovely tan to develop.
